elementary PREP

Elementary PREP is a targeted prevention and mentoring program serving 4th and 5th grade students in the City of St. Louis who have two or more risk factors. PREP holds four sessions per year, each serving a different school, for ten weeks at a time. Transportation is provided to and from the program.

The curriculum is a highly structured program designed to target social skills, self esteem, decision making skills, teamwork, and conflict resolution. PREP students participate in LifeSkills Training, cultural cooking, yoga, conflict resolution, science, art, and literacy activities. Upon completion of the ten-week afterschool program, children are matched with a mentor, who will work with the child for an additional twenty weeks. Mentoring sessions can be either school or community based and are tracked through the submission of monthly mentor journals. Each month, Discovering Options hosts a mentor-protégé outing to which all pairs are invited. Additional support is available through phone, email, or personal contact with the Mentor Support Specialist as well as quarterly mentor support meetings.

The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug     Abuse Directors selected Elementary PREP for national recognition at the 21st annual National Prevention Network (NPN) Research Conference in Indianapolis.

Congratulations to the Elementary PREP program for receiving the 2008 National Exemplary Award for Innovative Substance Abuse Prevention Programs, Practices and Policies!
